Skyscraper city: Zuidas architecture

by Folkert van Hagen on December 10, 2010

At the Kunstkapel, the Virtueel Museum Zuidas is hosting an exhibition about new architecture that has been built and that will be built on the Zuidas, the business district in the South of the city of Amsterdam. The exhibition features works by a number of architects, including GROUP A’s own AkzoNobel headquarters.

Most people tend to have the idea that the Zuidas is primarily a business district. As the exhibition shows, however, it is more and more becoming a mixed-use development, with housing estates, the new campus for VU University, and buildings for auctioneers Sotheby’s and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for the Arts.

This emphasis on buildings for the Arts is telling, as they were always considered a vital part of the Zuidas development. In fact, it was this notion led to the foundation of the Virtueel Museum Zuidas, which not only organizes exhibitions at the Kunstkapel but also supports arts projects in the public realm, in order to add an extra layer of depth to this newly built part of the city.

The exhibition will be on show until the 24th of December, the KunstKapel is open from Wednesday until Sunday, 12.00 – 19.00. The address is: Prinses Irenestraat 19, 1077 WT Amsterdam. For more info about the exhibition check out their website.
