Three consortia (from ten invited) have been shortlisted for the second stage of tender for the design and construction of the new European Patent Office (EPO) in Rijswijk / The Hague, The Netherlands:

  • BAM Utiliteitsbouw (NL) and Ballast Nedam B&O (NL) with architect Henning Larsen Architects (DK);
  • Group TBI (NL) with the architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel (FR) and Dam & Partners Architecten (NL);
  • Cordeel Nederland (NL) and Aannemingsmaatschappij CFE (BE) with the architects GROUP A (NL) and Art & Build (BE).

The new building has to replace the existing seventies premises and will be located within the confines of the existing site. The proposed offices will accommodate nearly 1,800 staff.

The main challenge faced by the consortia is the need to construct the new building – with a planned gross floor area of approx. 80,000 sqm – while ensuring all other buildings and facilities on the site to remain fully operational throughout the construction period. The current outdated building will be demolished after the envisaged completion in 2017, to make way for further comprehensive landscaping.
