GROUP A visit to the fabric factory of Kvadrat

by Birgitta Rottmann on March 28, 2014

For our project Interior De Rotterdam, the samples of the fabric had been approved by the client but the factory promised even better readability by turning on en of certain features at the machine. Last decisions before production could start had to be made on site. Andre Castro, Rotterdam based artist, Floor Zwijnenburg (Kvadrat) and me, Birgitta Rottmann (GROUP A) made a day trip to the very east tip of the Netherlands, to Winterswijk, to see the fabric being woven in front of our eyes.

A very exciting moment in the progress of refurbishing 2.000 office chairs for the Municipality of Rotterdam who are going to move to De Rotterdam by the end of the year.

After a few tryouts we were confident that the result will be an amazingly beautiful fabric that consists of all Rotterdam streetnames. More than 200 meters of unique fabric that will be put on the back of the chairs, which also means no chair will be the same.

Next stop of the fabric will be the social workshop of the “Haeghe Groep” who are responsible for the renovation of the chairs. More posts to come.
