Imagine ‘De Kleine Wereld’

de kleine wereld | Rotterdam

For a while now, we’ve been researching one of the initiatives of the city of Rotterdam to make the inner-city a more attractive and lively place. It’s called ‘De Kleine Wereld’, aka ‘the Small World’; with this concept we want to emphasize the multicultural identity of our city in a positive and accessible way.

Nowadays, Rotterdam accommodates inhabitants from up to 173 different ethnicities. It’s our plan to show these different cultures in a more explicit and attractive way, in order to make facilities like a Polish delicatessen shop or a Cape Verdian Zouk stage more approachable.

To facilitate this we’ve explored strategic locations in Oude Westen, to see what kind of exotic shops or restaurants there already are and to find out about other developments which could possibly be integrated in the ‘De Kleine Wereld’ concept. We will be supported by the city of Rotterdam in developing a marketing concept and attracting various entrepreneurs.

Imagine the near future; you catch a tuktuk to one of the entrance gates to ‘De Kleine Wereld’ and stroll along the Surinamese goldmerchants, get an African coffee and pay a visit to the Sahara Museum. After that you meet a friend in the Portuguese Fado restaurant and during dinner you would discuss whether to go to the Bollywoodcinema or have a drink in the typical German Biergarten….
